About AWAGAMI FACTORY:
AWAGAMI FACTORY has a rich history that stretches back over eight generations. Its origins can be traced to the 18th century. In 1945, 6th generation papermaker Minoru Fujimori took over the family business to continue washi papermaking despite post-WWII difficulties. Situated in the Tokushima region, the factory benefited from an abundance of high quality natural resources, including grown kozo and mulberry trees, essential ingredients for crafting fine washi.
Through the centuries, the Fujimori family refined their papermaking techniques, perfecting the delicate balance of tradition and innovation.Their dedication to preserving the essence of washi while adapting to the evolving demands of the modern world has been a hallmark of AWAGAMI FACTORY.
In the 20th century, AWAGAMI FACTORY played a pivotal role in reviving interest in traditional Japanese papermaking, contributing to resurgence of washi as a valuable artistic medium. Today, it stands as a bridge between the past and present, offering a glimpse into rich heritage of Japanese paper craftsmanship.
With its deep historical roots and commitment to excellence, AWAGAMI FACTORY remains a cherished institution in the world of papermaking, celebrated for both its history and its enduring dedication to producing exquisite handmade papers.
The primary requirement for the NOR-LIGHT washi paper dial is its extreme thinness. If the paper were too thick, it would result in a substantial total thickness when combined with the Sapphire Crystal and Base Plate, potentially causing interference with the movement's hands.
After thorough testing of various AWAGAMI FACTORY washi paper options, we have proudly selected AWAGAMI FACTORY Tengucho Extra Thin washi paper. It not only fulfills but exceeds all our prerequisites for crafting the NOR-LIGHT dial.
The photos above illustrate the remarkable thinness of the AWAGAMI FACTORY's Tengucho Extra Thin washi paper against a white background,
To put it into perspective, a typical inkjet paper has a thickness of approximately 90-100gsm, whereas the Tenguchao Extra Thin washi paper from AWAGAMI FACTORY is astonishing 10 times thinner, measuring just 9gsm.
Note: Due to the handmade nature of Washi paper, there may be slight variations in the dial color of the production models.
The unique Rota-Date Display has always been a signature design element of MMI Watches, and the NOR-LIGHT will also inherit this distinctive feature too
Our new approach to displaying the date involves using Tinted Sapphire Glass as the dial, capitalising on its translucent qualities and incorporating a custom date wheel. This design significantly enhances date legibility compared to our past models.
Additionally, the date wheel indicator is coated with lume, meaning date glow in the dark.
Introducing our 3rd and final version, the NOR-LIGHT No Date.
Not everyone has the chance to travel abroad to seek out and witness the Northern Lights. Even for those who can, spotting them isn't always guaranteed; you must be in the right location at the perfect moment.
That's why we've decided to print the Northern Lights on the Sapphire dial of the NOR-LIGHT. This way, everyone can admire "The Northern Light" on the NOR-LIGHT, regardless of their location or timing.
- Awagami Factory Washi paper is handmade and hand-dyed, slight variations in shade can occur between batches. Additionally, the color can sometimes appear differently in photographs versus in person. Please be assured, the dial is indeed crafted using Awagami Factory’s Washi paper.
